The Hotpoint electric range is a classic appliance. Heck, my grandma still has her 1960's stove-top in her small cabin by the lake and it still works wonderfully. But, General Electric is noted for producing some of the most solid kitchen appliances on the market, and their Hot Point series is no exception.
I've encountered quite a few bad brands in my days working as a salesperson at a local appliance store, and I could always confirm the quality of GE appliances. There are a couple of other good brands out there, but GE just produces some classic workhorses. We actually had several of those fancy European (and especially Italian) appliances in our store, and they definitely had certain aesthetic qualities - they're lovely little things, honestly - but they would be returned time and time again with a host of problems.
This was really a pain because the parts were so much more expensive. While the initial commissions on merchandise like that were higher, and they were good looking machines at first sight, I soon figured out that it wasn't worth selling them. It not only cost the shop money (which I became a partial investor in after a couple of years) due to the greater amount of repairs we had to do on the machines, but it also hurt my sales in the end.
People get angry when you sell them things that break. Even if you did not know about the quality problems, and willing to fix the problem ASAP, it still was quite a bit of time out of someone's day. From all of my experience, I can state that GE produces some great appliances, and their electric ranges particularly stand out. Not only to do they keep abreast of all of the new (and now apparently necessary features), but they are much less likely to break.
Fewer and fewer companies make quality products, and the Hotpoint electric ranges are still the workhorses that they have always been. Frankly, if you're actually using your appliances, there is no reason to simply go for anything that looks good. Go for something that makes an effort to combine style and function. And be sure it is a good appliance. From my experiences, you can't go astray with a GE Hotpoint range.
