A Young Gentleman Needs Counseling For His Intense Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Alcoholism And Drug Addiction

About eight months ago I had lunch with a thirty-one-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from extreme depression, has relationship difficulties, and who is dependent on alcohol and drugs. As declared by Benjamin, it is his drug and alcohol addiction and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his recurring relationship problems.

As stated by Benjamin, he is so overwhelmed by his relationship issues and by both of his medical issues that he in essence has little or no motivation to do much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin completed one semester of grad school in theology.

Benjamin's circumstance makes me question if he is an illustration of a person who can address his drinking problems and substance abuse and do something positive about these problems. Or, to the contrary, if he is someone who has to hit life's bottom before he gets drug and alcohol addiction counseling that leads to long-term recovery.

It may be asked how treatment would help his drug and alcohol addiction. For starters, there are several recently discovered physician-prescribed medications that can help Benjamin through his withdrawal symptoms, through the alcohol and alcohol detox process, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in rehabilitation he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is completely nothing healthy about chemical dependency and careless and excessive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that involving himself in one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the map to legal problems, deteriorating health, a premature death, poor work and school performance, shattered relationships, and financial difficulties. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship difficulties might help him deal with these mental health issues more successfully and help create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in treatment he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.

Since Benjamin lacks the drive to succeed at doing much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he urgently needs some hope for a better life. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the treatment he requires for his intense depression and drug addiction and alcohol dependency and adhere to his treatment protocol.

Benjamin is simply too young to be defeated in life. He doesn't understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to stay away from drugs and alcohol through alcohol and drug rehab and get the treatment he needs for his severe depression, he can turn his life around and start living with passion, self-respect, and direction.

Stronger relationships, constructive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are clearly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to get the medical rehab he needs, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in a drug and alcohol-free and healthy manner, and learn how to develop a more positive attitude about his life.
